G4S Climate Action: Our Carbon Footprint

As an organisation that specialises in managing risk, we at G4S recognise that the threat to people and infrastructure from climate change is an important and ongoing concern for our group, our customers and our employees.

We are proud of the progress our G4S Climate Action Programme has made since its launch in 2008 and the steps we have taken to create an environmentally sustainable G4S.

In 2010, we calculate that our global operations had a carbon footprint of some 610,000 tonnes of CO2e. Over 66% of this was generated by our fleet of more than 30,000 vehicles. Energy use in offices and other buildings including detention facilities, cash processing environments and employee accommodation account for another 28% of our footprint – providing us with excellent opportunities to implement carbon reduction projects achieving cost savings.

Since 2009, our carbon emissions have decreased 2% overall, reducing our carbon intensity by 5.4% (t/CO2e per £m revenue) and exceeding our 2010 target of 4.5%.

This is a realisation of the efforts we have committed to introducing energy efficiency measures across our business and a positive step towards our target to reduce carbon intensity by 13% by 2012.
