G4S Sailors Take Gold
G4S sponsored 49er sailors Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes won the first gold medal of the Delta Lloyd Regatta in Holland over the weekend, adding 20 points to their ISAF World Cup total and sending them into fourth place in the standings, with two stages left to go in the series.
Armed with a new boat, which they named Mistress Mabel, Stevie and Ben clinched the regatta victory by four points over the talented Australian pair of Nathan Outteridge and Ian Jenson, who’d lost only three regattas out of 11 over the past two years.
Stevie and Ben were pleased that they found their stride early on in the Dutch competition, finding themselves in gold medal position even before the medal race took place. Stevie said: “Technically there were only two boats that could beat us and [the Australians] were the closest. For us it made no difference where we came in the medal race as long as we were within a couple of boats of them.”
With this win, the former World Champions picked up their first Grade 1 regatta victory in three years, the last being the Delta Lloyd Regatta in 2008. Stevie said: “We won this Regatta in 2008. After that we have not won another regatta. And now we have a medal again. So we like it here.”
G4S are a Silver level sponsor of the British sailing team, Skandia Team GBR, and is supporting the 49er crew in their campaign to represent Team GB at London 2012.
Next up for the pair is the next stage of the ISAF Sailing World Cup which will see them head to the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy for the Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta from June 5-11, where Stevie and Ben, along with all G4S sponsored sailors, will be competing on the London 2012 Olympic waters.
