Response to Racial Inequality and Civil Unrest
The events that began to unfold last week in the United States with the tragic death of George Floyd and the resulting civil unrest that has transpired since then are unlike anything most of us have ever experienced in our lifetimes. Activism and protest about racial injustice have even taken place throughout the Americas — Canada in particular — as other nations face similar challenges. At G4S this situation impacts us both professionally and personally. Our role as security service providers puts us front and center as protests, riots and vandalism have escalated. Some of our employees are on the front lines of the unrest as they protect our customers’ properties and assets in their local communities. Others provide technology and intelligence solutions to inform customers of anticipated risks while others assess and advise on actions to mitigate impact to client assets. Professionally, I could not be more proud of how our team has performed under these tense situations by quickly stepping up and providing significant value and support.
But on a personal level, many of us are shaken and devastated by this experience and facing many emotions. G4S is an organization that values diversity of all backgrounds, ethnicities and perspectives, and the African American community is a valued part of our organization.We stand together with our African American employees, customers and industry peers in what we hope will finally become a time of much needed transformation against social injustice. The words written by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. illustrate our solidarity:
We all have an active role to play in this time of change by promoting dialog about this topic, respecting different perspectives, treating each other with dignity and continuing to foster an environment where everyone feels safe, valued and included. Acting with dignity and respect is central to our core values and calls on G4S to be a company with zero tolerance for racism and discrimination.
For those personally affected by these injustices, I empathize with you and hold you in my prayers. As we have experienced in recent months facing the pandemic, when our company rallies together, we can overcome. The diversity of our employees is what has made G4S such a great place to work. I ask for each individual in our 120,000-strong team from across the Americas to support each other. Racism has no place at G4S or in our communities.
