Our History

Beginning with our Danish foundations in 1901, G4S has over 100 years' of history. Expertise gained from delivering a variety of services across the globe has made us what we are today.

Between 1901 and 1950 our foundations in Denmark were laid, leading to national growth, our first moves into overseas territories and the emergence of securitas international.

G4S can trace its roots back to 1935 in the UK, making 2010 its 75-year anniversary

G4S can trace its roots back to 1901 when Marius Hogrefe started the manned security company "Kjøbenhavn Frederiksberg Nattevagt" in Scandinavia. Its earliest roots in the UK appeared in 1935 when a former cabinet minister launched ‘Night Watch Services’ – a modest enterprise with four bicycle-riding guards in old police uniforms. In 1951 it was renamed Securicor and it floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1971.

Meanwhile in 1950 the Danish Philip-Sorensen family established its first company in the UK, one of a number organised under the name Securitas International. In 1968 the UK arm of Securitas International was renamed Group 4. Group 4 split from Securitas in 1981 and merged with Falck in 2000 to form Group 4 Falck.

In 2004 Securicor merged with Group 4 Falck’s security business and the new company, Group 4 Securicor, began trading on the London and Copenhagen Stock Exchanges. On 1 June 2007 the company officially became known as G4S and the group subsequently dropped ‘Group 4 Securicor’ from its branding in January 2009.
